Soy Wax vs Gel Wax: Which Should You Gift?

If you're choosing a candle to gift or for your own home, you'll likely come across two common wax types: soy wax and gel wax. They look and behave quite differently, and picking the right one depends on what you actually want from the candle.

Soy Wax: clean, long-lasting, and easy to gift

Soy wax is made from soybean oil and is the most common choice for handcrafted candles — it's what Pink Blossom uses across most of our collection. It burns cleaner than paraffin, holds fragrance well without being overpowering, and typically burns longer for the same size candle. It's also biodegradable and easier on sensitive noses, which makes it a safer, more broadly appealing gift.

Gel Wax: transparent, decorative, and design-forward

Gel wax is a mix of mineral oil and resin, giving it a clear, glass-like appearance. This makes it ideal for decorative candles — embedded flowers, layered colours, or objects suspended inside the wax, since the transparency shows off the design in a way solid wax can't. Gel candles tend to burn slightly differently (often with a smaller, more contained flame) and are chosen more for visual impact than for scent throw.

Which should you gift?

  • For a broadly safe, everyday gift — soy wax is the reliable choice. It suits most homes, most fragrance preferences, and doesn't require the recipient to have a particular aesthetic in mind.
  • For a decorative, statement gift — gel wax candles work well when the visual design itself is the gift, such as floral or themed pieces meant to be displayed.
  • For corporate or bulk gifting — soy wax is usually the safer, more consistent choice across a large, varied group of recipients.
